Agreement Power
Text: Matthew 18:19
Introduction: What does it really mean to God, and the angels when two mortals come into an agreement. When Abraham agreed with God, then the blessing that resides in God came upon Abraham's life and family for all generations. It was so powerful that if you wanted to be blessed, all you had to do was bless Abraham and his seed.
Any first year law student will tell you that where two people agree; then there is a contract established. In a contract one person sweares to do what they have the ability to do, and the person they are in agreement with sweares to do what they have the ability to do. Thus, two people with two different abilities accomplish great things working together to get a job done.
I. Two can build a house
The word of God says, "unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor is in vain." People marry, with no idea of what they are doing. One of my favorite scriptures is Hosea 4:6. "My people perish for lack of knowledge." The word perish here is the Hebrew word that means to be cut off.
Jesus reminds us in the teaching on attitudes that what God has joined together, we are to never let any man put asunder. 50% of all marriages break up. Well it is understandable in the natural. But 50% of people that are Christian marriages break up. Why?
No commitment to the contract they made with each other, and God. Throughout the Old Testament we read about the importance of keeping our vows. My dad had an old saying and it went something like this; "If a man's word was no good, then you know the man is no good."
II. One cannot build a house
In the church world we see single mothers trying to build a home for her children. We see single fathers trying to build a house for their children. My dad was a carpenter, and probable built thousands of houses in his life. But you know what?
I never once saw my dad try to build one house by himself. My dad was smarter than that, he knew it took painters, plumbers, roofers, and many other kinds of skills to build a good safe house. Even with all the experience and skill my dad had; he could not build our home without my mom! Dad and mom built children that have accomplished great things in the world.
My older brother Derrell retired from International Paper Company as a Supervisor in a plywood plant. But this was not Derrell's greatest work. His greatest work was with his wife Cheryl. They raised their daughter Honda a great lady that works in a Federal Prison with her husband Mike raising two great boys.
My sister Deronda is the wife of a Pastor who has pastored the same church for 40 years. Deronda and Don have 3 boys and 1 girl. Deronda has 8 grand-children. Their oldest son Tim was a Pastor, and is now a Paramedic, and Police Officer. David their second son owns his own business.
Jeff their third son is one of the bosses in a commercial air condition business, and one half owner of a large farm with his dad in Prattsville Arkansas. Becky a college graduate, former bank-teller, and one great mom of 2 beautiful daughters. Casper, Becky's husband owns his own construction business, and is constantly traveling somewhere in the world on mission trip.
My point is where two agree, you'll find miracles. "One will put a thousand to flight, two ten thousand." Daddy and mommy in agreement is ten times more powerful, than just one by themselves.
III. Two means three
Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there am I in the mist of them."
Jesus wasn't just talking about two people living in the same house, and sleeping in the same bed. He was referring to where two are gathered together in an agreement. An atmosphere of peace and contentment produces a harvest of great kids that grow up to become world changers.
"Unless two agree, how can they walk together." If you want God's help in building your house, you have to get the big I, MYSELF, MY DESIRES, MY PLANS out of your thinking, and decisions.
The most powerful thing a couple can do for their mate is to say, "I'm sorry please forgive me." Jesus preached repentance. Why don't we listen, and become one through the power of agreement again. "Resist the devil, and draw near to God" in agreement!
Conclusion: Only seven words: where there is agreement, there is power!
