God’s Grace of Protection from all hurt, harm, evil, and the evil ones.
First, some of God’s amazing promises of protection which are intended for you and me:
Ps 91:10-11 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.
2 Thess 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. NASU
Ps 121:7-8 The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
Luke 10:19 Behold, I (Jesus) give you the authority...over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
These are extraordinary promises. Why then do so few Christians enjoy these kinds of promised protections from God? Either God lied or there must be some good and valid conditions or requirements attached to these promises that somehow are not being met:
What are the conditions I must meet in order to be in a place where God can protect me?
1. Live in God: Ps 91:9-10 Because you have made the LORD...your dwelling place, (instead of your human nature) No evil shall befall you...
2. Obey God: 1 Pe 3:13 Who is he who will harm you if you follow (Him who) is good John 15:10 (Jesus) When you obey me you are living in my love... TLB
3. Stop sinning:1 Jo 5:18 ...Anyone born of God (and living in Him) does not sin, but the One Who was (first) begotten of God (Christ) watches over and protects him. Christ's divine presence within him preserves him against evil, and the wicked one does not (cannot) touch him. AMP
Prov 12:21 No actual evil, misfortune, or calamity shall come upon the (AMP) righteous...(to stay righteous is to have been forgiven then freed from sin).
Yes we have an adversary the devil, who comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). He can’t hurt us if we meet the above conditions and cooperate with God in certain ways:
How must I cooperate with God in order for Him to keep me protected from the devil?
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober (always under God’s control) be vigilant (alert, always discerning God’s will) because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (the ignorant, unrighteous, unresisting).
James 4:7 Submit to God, resist the devil (by trusting God) and he will flee from you.
John 10:5 ...For they (we) do not know (or listen to) the voice of strangers (demons)
2 Cor 2:11 Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices (his thoughts, that Satan uses to take Christians captive to sin again).
But what about Job – how come Satan was able to harm him, are we this vulnerable too?
Job 1:9-10 Satan answered "Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has...”
God says there was none like Job in all the earth (Satan lies to many that they are just like Job). Job was perfect and upright in all his ways. He feared God and hated evil. Because Job obeyed God, God was able to put a hedge of protection around him that the devil couldn’t penetrate. Satan challenged God to stop protecting Job and let him attack him, boasting this perfect and upright man would curse God if attacked without a cause.
Under very specific conditions God allowed this one challenge. It lasted about 6 months. Satan was proved wrong and God was vindicated. God’s hedge of protection around Job was restored for the remaining 140 years of his life and whatever he lost was restored double. A similar challenge by Satan over a Christian can’t happen for three reasons:
(i) Most Christians don’t live in the Spirit under God’s protection (ii) Those who do Satan can’t touch under the New Covenant (1 Jo 5:18) (iii) Job settled Satan’s challenge for us all.
Job 42:12-16 Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning ...After this (brief trial) Job lived one hundred and forty years...
There is no partiality with God (Rom 2:11) what He did for Job He would like to do for all of His children, His vineyard. But we, as with the people of Jerusalem in Christ’s day, we won’t let Him. Even when He succeeds, we breach the hedge and then Satan strikes us.
Mark 12:1 (Jesus) A man (God) planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it...
Matt 23:37 O Jerusalem...How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings but you wouldn't let me.
Eccl 10:8 ...Whoever breaks through a hedge, a serpent (Satan) shall bite him. KJV
Why doesn’t God just protect me, isn’t He supposed to be in control, regardless of Satan?
Deut 30:19 (God) I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore (you) choose life that both you and your descendants may live;
Jer 11:10 ...The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant...
Jer 44:10 ...They have not walked in My law or in My statutes that I set before you...
God in His wisdom gave us human beings a free will. Meaning we get to choose whether we will obey Him or disobey Him. In this way God greatly limited His control over the activities of man. Throughout history man has exercised that free will to disobey God. That’s why to say “God is in control on the earth” while man has a free will to reject God’s control, and has done so, is a total contradiction of the truth. However, in the kingdom of Heaven God remains entirely in control. The only time God controls on the earth is when a person submits his free will to God and then does, or at God’s direction prays, God’s will.
Heb 12:9 ...Shall we not much more readily put ourselves in subjection to the Father of (our) spirits (who gave us birth as Christians) and live?
Some Christians chafe at the idea of being continually under the control of God, that is, under the control of Love. They do not understand that when we exercise our free will to reject God’s (Love’s) control over us, then by default we are under the control of our human nature, where sin and pride reign. Being in the flesh we are subject to the influence of the ungodly people of the world and to the thoughts of the evil spirits that rule the world (1 Jo 5:19). In other words we are under the control of the three enemies of God, of Love.
If I submit to God’s protection during the daytime am I protected while I am asleep?
Prov 1:33 (God) But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil.
Prov 3:24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
Ps 4:8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell (while asleep) in safety.
Does God actually mean for all of us to have a long, safe and healthy life on the earth?
Ps 91:16 With long life I will satisfy him (who lives in Me) and show him My salvation.
Ex 23:26 ...I will fulfill the number of your days.
Prov 3:1-2 My son, do not forget my law (My words), But let your heart keep my commands; for length of days, long life And peace they will add to you.
Isa 65:20 No more babies dying in the cradle, or old people who don't enjoy a full lifetime; One-hundredth birthdays will be considered normal... MSGE
How then do I receive this grace, of God’s protection from evil, of safety, and of long life?
Rom 4:16 Therefore it (protection) is of faith, that it can be by grace;
Rom 5:2 Through Christ also we have access by faith into this grace (of protection).
Heb 4:2 The word (God’s promise of protection) which they heard did not profit them not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
Ps 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust (to preserve me).
God wants it to be well with every Christian if we will love Him, believe Him and obey Him
Jer 7:23 But this is what I commanded them, saying, 'Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.'
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed (not protected) for lack of knowledge..
Wouldn’t you like to have God protecting you? Then let God’s words speak to you, believe them, allow them to enter your heart to change your nature and increase your faith in God as your protector. Why not create a folder for this article and title it “I am protected by God”.
