Fallen Soldier's Wife

Fallen Soldier's Wife

International Picture of the Year
Second Place
Todd Heisler, The Rocky Mountain News

The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. 'I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it,' she said. 'I think that's what he would have wanted.'

Sacrifice of our families for the freedom of the many
by: Luis A. Rendon

The use of the word sacrifice to many means nothing. It is a word that means to give something up, but some many never know what that something is and just how much its means to them.

To the many who understand sacrifice in the way that this widow does, thank you. Thank you for sharing with us this that you held so dear and so close and thank you for taking onto yourself this great burden. We as American’s thank you and those who gave their lives for us to enjoy the freedoms the many take for granted. May god bless you before he blesses us all.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, a day of remembrance for those who gave their lives so that we may live a freely. Please know there are many of us who do not need one day out of the year to honor these heroes. Cat & all of the other men & women who died defending my freedom are remembered daily. I pray for God to give you peace, comfort & strength in your times of need. My heart goes out to you & yours.

Like others have stated before - there is nothing harder than to be a military spouse. May God be with you during this time of heartache. God Bless.

Fallen Hero.

I am so sorry for your loss. This picture puts tears in my eyes every time, but it also restores faith in people. Your husband was performing a noble deed in fighting for the freedom of others, and it says a lot that he was fighting alongside people such as the marine who watched over you for him when he would have wanted to most.
